Abstract

There are two major issues concerning the mobile and ubiquitous devices of today. The foremost being the prolonged energy requirements for the devices to function and second is to provide continuous service for the users considering the intermittent network access due to wireless nature of the devices. Computing in the edge sometimes could be beneficial for the user experience, but too much computation could also drain out the battery. Hence an important decision to either compute in the edge or to perform offloading, involves multiple parameters such as availability of computation power, characteristics of the wireless network, risk involved in offloading (such as intermittent connection). Offloading could also be a challenge considering communication with the outside world causes loss of energy. Thus, a risk analysis of performing offloading at the edge devices majorly solves the issue of unnecessary offloading of tasks to the high performing clusters/Cloud. Adding to the risk analysis, a thorough analysis of the mobile applications carried out via job profiling helps in categorizing the applications prior to decision making during the real-time.

Availability of heterogeneous wireless networks aids in providing seamless services to mobile users by performing physical layer as well as application level vertical handoff between the resources providing service to mobile users. Here the major challenges are to decide when to perform the handoff and how to carry out the migration between the resources especially considering the heterogeneous nature of the computer architecture. Virtualization certainly comes in rescue while the concerning resource is either a Cloud or a Cluster, but setting up of a virtualized environment is a time consuming task owing to prolonged execution time and in turn reduced user experience. Thus, at most care is taken to bundle the data and code in a mobile agent for the handoff to be successful. The application of the proposed solution has been tested and verified empirically using mobile data network, WLAN and ad hoc networks with bluetooth.

About the speaker

Dr. Anuradha Ravi is an Assistant Professor working at Shiv Nadar University, in the department of Computer Science and Engineering with School of Engineering. She received her Ph.D. degree from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2016. Her Ph.D. thesis focused on improving energy efficiency of mobile devices and providing seamless service to mobile users. Her research interests include Mobile Cloud Computing, Wireless Communication, Ad Hoc Network, SDN, NFV, 5G and IoT. She has attended and presented papers in various international conferences and Ph.D. symposiums, receiving best paper award and accolade for researcher in the field of Mobile Computing for her Ph.D. thesis.

Prior to joining Ph.D., Dr. Anuradha has worked in MNCs like Cognizant and Mahindra Satyam. She also has experience in taking up freelance web development and maintenance for many eminent celebrities in India.

Post submission of Ph.D. thesis, Dr. Anuradha worked in Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee as a research assistant for the project titled, Energy Efficient Multimedia Streaming for Mobile Broadband Users. During her tenure in Shiv Nadar University, she has guided many students for pursuing research in multiple projects such as, Energy and Cost Effective Cooperative Strategy for IoT Devices, Smart Edge Devices to Reduce Latency in 5G Environment, Establishing trust and privacy among the peers in a mesh network. She has also been a coach and guided students for ACM ICPC programming contest for the year 2017 and 2018.
